2021 JV B Season Recap

The Xaverian 2021 JV B Football team looked different compared to teams of prior years. Starting from up top as first-time new Head Coach Dominick Aluotto took the reins from previous Head Coach Jesus Cardona. With a shortened offseason, first-time Head Coach/play-caller, first-time defensive coordinator, and no sophomores playing any high school football games prior to this season, the Xaverian Clippers had their work cut out for them.

The team was led by Sophomore Captains Thomas McMorrow, Mike Blackwell, Freddie Scuteri and Aidan Leary. The JV football team was supposed to open their season opener verse Cardinal Spellman but unfortunately, Spellman dropped out of the league. The Clippers were able to find a team to fill that slot which turned out to be Saint Peters JV A team. The game did not go Xaverian’s way as they fell 31-0 to the Eagles in this non-league game. The Clippers were back after it the next weekend versing Moore Catholic in what would be the Clippers first league game of the season. Leading 3-0 at halftime from a field goal by Freshman Kicker Federico Farina, the Clippers could not keep that stellar defense up and lost the game 14-3. Being 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the league, the Clippers were hosting Saint Joseph by the Sea for their first home game of the season. A defensive battle it was as the game was tied 0-0 going into the 4th quarter. The Vikings were able to pull away with an 8-0 victory which now made the Clippers 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the league. On top of these struggles through three games, the Clippers scored 0 touchdowns. Xaverian was now headed out to play Holy Cross at their home field in Queens. This game was another defensive showdown as the teams were tied 0-0 going into the 4th quarter like the week before. This time would be different though as Sophomore fullback Thomas McMorrow scored on a 1-yard fullback dive that was set up by a beautiful pass and catch by freshman quarterback Jude Van Ooyen and Sophomore Wide Receiver Spiros Drossos to give the Clippers their first touch down of the season which led to their first win of the season.

The following week the Clippers hosted Xavier at home, which was a dominating game by the Clippers from start to end. Touchdowns scored by Freshman Running Back Antonio Hernandez, Sophomore Wide Receiver Jayden Buono, Sophomore Quarterbacks Aidan Leary, and Tristian Gallagher then finally Sophomore Wide Receiver Andrew Owens. The final score was 30-6 and it seemed Xaverian had started to get some swagger.

This rolled over into the next game where the touchdowns came in plentifully again as the team played Saint Francis Prep. Sophomore running back Freddie Scuteri rushed for over 150 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Sophomore Wide Receivers Jayden Buono and Spiros Drossos each scored a touchdown. Freshman Quarterback Jude Van Ooyen threw a touchdown while Freshman Fullback Tight End Hybrid Thomas Kwiecien scored a rushing touchdown as well. Sophomore Quarterback Tristian Gallagher ran for three 2pt conversions while the Xaverian Defense also recorded a safety. The Clippers won 38-6 now flipping their league record from 0-2 to 3-2. Xaverian had a bye week as they geared up for their final game of the season verse Saint John the Baptist. Heading into the game, Saint John’s was 5th in the league overall and Xaverian was 6th putting some importance on this final game. What a game it was as the Xaverian Clippers came out victorious with a 13-6 victory. Sophomore Running Back Freddie Scuteri rushed for a touchdown and Freshman Free Safety Thomas Martin caught an interception and returned it for a touchdown.

Xaverian’s JV B Football team ended the season with an overall record of 4-3 and a league record of 4-2. In the league, they finished in 4th place out of 16 teams. Finishing 10th in points scored and 2nd in points allowed, Xaverian’s defense was amazing all year. This Clipper team had to overcome a lot this season and were able to finish on a strong note with a 4 game win streak.
