The first day Mark took his two daughters to tee-ball practice, he quickly realized the inequity girls in sports were faced with. While the boys were on the whole field surrounded by about ten coaches, the girls were stuck in a corner of the outfield with one mom doing her best to keep them interested. He decided he needed to get involved and try to make some changes.
Although Mark played many sports growing up, football was his passion. He tried to take the lessons he learned playing football -- hard work, commitment, attention to detail, and the concept of teamwork -- and apply them to coaching softball. He quickly went from tee-ball coach to All-Star coach to travel coach and finally high school coach, winning many local, state, regional and national championships. Along the way, Mark realized the trophies were far less important than the impact he was able to have on the futures of his players.
At Xaverian, he has developed a team culture that embodies those same ideals that will hopefully last a lifetime for our girls.
