Thomas J. Burns ’83 has been a dedicated member of the Xaverian community for close to four decades, serving in various roles that have profoundly impacted students, athletes, and alumni alike. Beginning his tenure in 1987 as a freshman assistant basketball coach and varsity tennis coach, he quickly became a cornerstone of the school’s faculty, teaching English and mentoring students both in and out of the classroom.
Over the years, Tom’s commitment extended way beyond teaching English, as he took on leadership positions, including, Class Coordinator, Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, and Guidance Counselor. His passion for athletics saw him coaching basketball at multiple levels for over thirty years, preparing and teaching his players the importance of representing themselves and Xaverian to the best of their ability. He took immense pride in helping his players become better people first, and basketball players second.
A valued leader in bringing Clipper’s together, Tom currently serves as Director of Alumni Relations, strengthening connections between past and present Clippers. His unwavering dedication to Xaverian has earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame, a member of the Brother Padraic Society, recognition as a St. Michael’s Alumni Society Honoree, and a recipient of the prestigious Xaverian Ryken Award.
Through his many roles, Tom Burns has exemplified the spirit of Xaverian, fostering a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and service. His ever-present enthusiasm and passion for Xaverian and its community are displayed daily, and his genuine love for the Xaverian students and alumni is authentically eternal. Tom is a 1983 graduate and the father of Dillon ’12, Megan, and Daniel ’17 and the proud grandparent of Cameron, ’43.
