Matthew Scally ‘87, has devoted more than thirty years to higher education. A graduate of St. John’s University and Long Island University he is the newly-named Director of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation at CUNY College of Staten Island. During his career, Matt has worn many hats, having held roles in admissions, academic advising, and athletics; eventually serving as Associate Athletics Director and Director of Compliance at LIU. For the last decade, he was the Associate Athletic Director for Intercollegiate Sports Programs at Columbia University.
Matthew credits Xaverian with shaping his values and setting him on his career path. His time as an athlete inspired his lifelong commitment to athletic administration, teaching him lessons in teamwork, dedication, and perseverance. “While my athletic skills were quite limited,” he joked, “the experiences that sports taught me and how they translate into everyday life lessons inspired my career.”
He cherishes the friendships formed at Xaverian, recalling fond memories of “hanging out with friends in the cafeteria.” Influential mentors, including Deacon Mac, Mrs. Dopman, and Brother Jim Smith left a lasting impression with their support and guidance. The values of humility and compassion he developed at Xaverian remain integral to his daily life. Matthew is also the proud father of Daniel ‘19 and Grace ‘20.
To current students, Matthew advises embracing the journey and seizing all that Xaverian offers. “The lasting memories will be the connections you make with friends, faculty, and staff,” he emphasized, adding that alumni are a vital link to future possibilities. Quoting Deacon Mac, he reflected, “Alumni are the bridge to the current generation that stands on the shoulders of the giants who came before.”
