An Election to Remember: Schiano Elected Class President 2024-25 School Year

X-Press Staff
It is tradition for Xaverian to annually elect the class president of SCC for the next school year. Held during the last month of school, the SCC election this year was between six different candidates, a record-breaking number: Jaiden Cadotte, John McCarthy, Ellie Cavallo; Grace Lanier, Michelle Bernardinello, Donald Cranston; Joseph Romano, Michael Romano, Emma Brogan; John Schiano, Jayson Gagliano, Christopher Rosado; Shane Sullivan, Emmie Nittolo, Kai McCoy; Julia Turchiano, Kalliopi Papantoniou, Jack Duggan.

Running with creative slogans like “Don’t let Xaverian rot, vote Cadotte,” and “End your search, vote for Turch,” candidates and their cabinets began their campaigning on Monday, May 20, 2024. Throughout the following weeks, the candidates brought in food, put up posters around the building, and released videos on their respective campaign Instagram accounts.

On Monday, June 3, 2024, the initial election was held in school. As per the rules of SCC, if a candidate wins by simple majority in the first round of voting, they automatically become the president. Although it didn’t happen this year, there have been rare occurrences of this happening. This year, the runoff election was between candidates current Vice President Joseph Romano and John Schiano. Both Romano and Schiano were members of SCC since their sophomore and freshman years, respectively.

Mr. Hoban had been saying since the beginning of the election that “the vote would be between either Joe or John.”

Romano and Schiano each had their own campaign promises.

Romano promised boosting school social events, preservation of the cafeteria mural, furniture back into Alumni Hall, winter formals, car shows in the parking lot, a Halloween dance for high school, fixing the homeroom representative system, introducing a school mascot, allowing sports teams to choose from retro designs to make their current design, bringing back Boys Night at the X, bringing back Girls Paint Night with Mom, doing an art contest for a painting of the Clipper Ship if the old one gets knocked down, intramural spikeball tournaments, teacher talent show during Spirit Week, Are You Smarter Than A 6th Grader between 6th and 12th graders during Spirit Week, Field Day for high school, Fireside Chats on campaign Instagram, and finding leaders for Campus Ministry’s Listen Nights.

Schiano’s campaign promises included CST Friday, lunch schedules on the Harbor, club calendars, intramural sports, and suggestion forums.

On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, the runoff election was held. In a twisting turn of events, Schiano won against current Vice President Romano. The results of the election, according to Mr. Penta, SCC director, were 453-307 in favor of Schiano.

When students were asked about who they voted for and why, many students were swayed just by the amount of food that was brought in. On June 3, Schiano brought in, according to Schiano himself, “about 480 mini cannolis.” The next day, Schiano brought in homemade cookies and brownies along with Sour Patch Kids. Some students even expressed that they voted for Schiano only because their friends did so.

“I voted based off the campaign videos since I was allergic to the food, but my friends voted because of food,” said Madison Hiler.

Wyatt Payne stated, “I voted for Romano because he said he’d put furniture back into Alumni Hall.”

Xaverian looks forward to all that the new administration has in store for its students!
